Western Michigan University football brought in talent and experience on the defense side earlier this week when they received a commitment from former University of Illinois defensive back Delano Ware. Ware was in the NCAA transfer portal.
The Broncos beat out the likes of TCU and Wake Forest for Ware who said he chose WMU because he believes in the coaches and program. Ware, a former 2-star recruit from El Cerrito, CA, entered the transfer portal in December of 2020 after head coach Lovie Smith was fired.
"(It) just wasn’t my best fit with Illinois anymore," Ware said to BroncoBlitz via Twitter. "(I) will always love the people at Illinois (but) just for personal growth, (I) had to go somewhere else."
WMU will not have to wait long to see Ware on the field. Due to COVID and changes in transfer eligibility, Ware will be eligible for the upcoming season.
"I have 2 years (eligibility) and we straight to business, not sitting out," Ware said.
With Ware's commitment, the Broncos are getting a seasoned vet that should provide leadership on the field, along with many other attributes.
"(I'm) very versatile with high football IQ. Blessed to have that," Ware said. "I bring back that old school physicality when it comes to exploding into people. I have range and I’m always near the ball."
Ware said he plans to play defensive back, specifically safety and left Bronco nation with a statement.
"Thank you for the opportunity. Very excited to be a part of the family," Ware said. "Get ready for a show."
