BroncoBlitz picks the MAC: Week Nine

SU = Straight up
ATS = Against the spread

David James: 61-12 SU, 31-41-1 ATS
D.J. Duckett: 64-9 SU, 34-36-3 ATS
Brian Persky: 63-10 SU, 37-34-1 ATS

This week marks the first time all year that no MAC team steps out of conference. There are also a couple of intriguing rivalry games, as Miami travels to Athens to take on Ohio and Toledo visits Bowling Green.

Ball State (-9) at Akron, Saturday noon

David: Akron continues to get better, but their inconsistent play and questionable pass defense doesn't bode well against the Cardinals. Ball State by 17

DJ: Akron has looked like an improving team as the season progresses, but I think Ball State's offense has too many weapons. BSU by 13

Brian: The Zips will put up some points and make this interesting, but I don't expect Ball State to get tripped up here. Akron's defense has been shredded by good offenses already this season. Ball St. by 14

Miami at Ohio (-25), Saturday 2:00pm

David: Miami has struggled mightily, but rivalry games are always interesting and Ohio has a history of letting lesser teams hang around. Ohio by 14

DJ: Seeing what Miami has done against less than quality opponents this season, I do not see them contending in this one. Ohio will win handily, but the 25 point spread I see being a bit on the optimistic side. Ohio by 17

Brian: Miami may have missed their opportunity to win a game this season when they lost three consecutive games to CMU, UMass, and Akron. Ohio by 21

Toledo at Bowling Green (-3.5), Saturday 2:30pm

David: I actually think Bowling Green may be the better overall team here, but I just don't like the matchup. Toledo has a few too many playmakers for the Falcons to keep up. Toledo by 7

DJ: Throw out the record books in this rivalry game. There are not many MAC defenses that can slow down Toledo, but I believe BGSU to be that exception. A close game, but I give the nod to the Falcons. BGSU by 3

Brian: BGSU caught a break in the schedule getting their bye after a physical game in Starkville, MS. However with Gallon out for the season, the Falcons might be hard-pressed to keep up with Toledo's offense. Toledo by 3

Eastern Michigan at #18 Northern Illinois (-31), Saturday 3:30pm

David: Eastern Michigan is just a mess right now. NIU hasn't blown everyone out, but I think this week will be an exception. NIU by 34

DJ: Jordan Lynch had a huge game last week and I fully expect the same this weekend in DeKalb. EMU may have trouble keeping this one from getting out of hand. NIU by 24

Brian: I can't see anything other than a blowout in Dekalb. But this spread is pretty wide even if it is Eastern Michigan we're talking about. NIU by 28

Buffalo at Kent State (-1), Saturday 3:30pm

David: I'm surprised to see KSU as the slight favorite here, but I agree with it. The Flashes' record may not be far above the bottom of the conference, but I honestly don't think Buffalo has played anyone nearly as good in MAC play. Kent State by 3

DJ: In games that I expect to be as close as this one, I tend to always lean the way of the home team and that trend will remain the same this week. Buffalo will have its hands full with Kent State's weapons on both offense and defense this week. Kent State by 7

Brian: It's been one of those years for Kent State. They keep coming up just short in big conference games. I think this is the week they overcome some adversity and win a big close game at home. Kent State by 4
