Iowa's Greg Davis recruitng efforts strengthening Central Texas
Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis has long-standing ties to Texas after coaching stints at Texas and Texas A&M. Now he's building relations between the state and Iowa.
The latest was an offer to Marble Falls receiver Garrett Gray.
Gray (6-5, 200) blossomed in the first-year of Marble Falls head coach Todd Dodge. and it was Dodge's influence which helped lure Davis to Marble Falls last week.
Davis wasn't at Marble Falls to see Garrett, but as the twists and turns of recruiting meander, Davis was at Marble Falls to watch '13 Iowa commit Nic Shimonek quarterback Corsicana Mildred to a Class 2A Division victory over Sonora.
Shimonek led Mildred to the 2A state final at Cowboys Stadium before falling to powerful East Bernard led by TCU commit Ty Slanina.
Just named to the AP Class 4A All-State second team, Gray caught 81 passes for 1,206 yards and 18 touchdowns. Marble Falls senior quarterback Mike Richardson was Honorable Mention after completing 225-339-4 passes for 2,763 yards with 31 touchdowns.
Garrett developed athletically as an elite youth basketball player. He's ranked in the Top 75 by TexasHoops.com for his class but has concentrated on football the past season. Coach Dodge has been encouraging college coaches to evaluate the Class of '14 receiver, who's also gotten interest from Texas A&M coach David Beaty, Texas Tech, Baylor and Rice.
When Davis showed up on campus to watch Shimonek, Dodge talked his friend into watching some video of Garrett.
After Davis had a chance to share the video with Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, he was able to offer Gray his first FBS scholarship offer.
