BroncoBlitz picks the MAC: Week Eight

There was a pretty wide disparity in against the spread picking this week, though the whole staff continues to break the .500 mark (11-10 this week). It should be an interesting chase down the stretch if things keep shuffling so much.

SU = Straight up
ATS = Against the spread

David James: 57-9 SU (6-1 last week), 31-23-1 ATS (6-1)
D.J. Duckett: 50-16 SU (5-2), 28-27 ATS (1-6)
Brian Persky: 52-14 SU (5-2), 28-26-1 ATS (4-3)

Northern Illinois (-17) at Akron

David: Akron's been pretty consistently playing teams closer than expected. I think that ends this week, as I'd consider NIU the best and most explosive team in the MAC. NIU by 25

D.J.: This game will be a bit one-sided. I think Jordan Lynch will continue to be a star in the Mid-American Conference, and the Huskies roll to victory. I like NIU by a lot. NIU by 21

Brian: No problems here for the visiting Huskies. Terry Bowden's long first-season gets even longer this Saturday against NIU. Jordan Lynch continues his impressive streak of passing and rushing for 100 yards each and makes it 6 consecutive games against the Zips. NIU by 17

Bowling Green (-18) at UMass

David: Bowling Green, statistically, has the best defense in the MAC. UMass won't threaten too much. BGSU by 24

D.J.: I don't see this one being close, as UMass is still searching for its first win of the season. The Falcons will go on the road and take care of business. BGSU by 21

Brian: UMass is coming off of a bye week and they've got a middle-of-the-road (4-3) BGSU team at home. Some potential danger here for the Falcons and normally I'd be tempted to call for an upset in this situation. But there's just something about this BGSU team that I really like. Not this week, UMass. BGSU by 17

Army (-2) at Eastern Michigan

David: This is probably EMU's best remaining chance at a win. If they play remotely like they did against Toledo, they'll get it done. EMU by 10

D.J.: This will be a tough matchup. The service academies always provide a unique kind of challenge. I think Ron English will have his boys ready for this one. EMU by 6

Brian: I'm not going to get too cute on this one. The service academies are always tough to prepare for, and Eastern Michigan is just bad. I don't think the Eagles can keep up with the Black Knights' rushing attack. Army by 7

Ball State (-3) at Central Michigan

David: CMU continues to be a thorn in my side, picks-wise. I'm not trusting them this week. Ball State by 14

D.J.: This is an interesting game. It just depends on which CMU decides to show up. I like the fact that they are at home, but I think Ball State is beginning to put things together and it will continue the success it had against WMU. Ball State by 7

Brian: Toughest pick of the week for me. My brain tells me the Cardinals are the obvious pick here. CMU seems due for a win this week and Ball State could be in for a letdown after last week's emotional overtime win against the Broncos. Either way, this is high scoring. Ball State by 7

Pittsburgh (-9) at Buffalo

David: I actually like Buffalo at home to keep this really close. I can't pull the trigger on the upset, but I don't think the Panthers are light-years ahead of the Bulls.Pitt by 3

D.J.: In the second matchup between the MAC and the Big East, I think that the MAC will not fair too well. Though Pitt hasn't been particularly impressive, I think they will be able to do more than enough to take down the struggling Bulls. Pitt by 14

Brian: The Big East is down this year, but so is Buffalo. A nice opportunity for Buffalo to get a quality BCS win, but I don't think they can pull it off. I like Pittsburgh a lot in this matchup. Pitt by 14

Cincinnati (-5) at Toledo

David: Extremely tough pick. I just feel Cincy has the best defense the Rockets will have seen so far. Should be a raucous crowd, but I still think the Bearcats survive. Cincy by 10

D.J.: This will be the game I will be most looking forward to. Toledo plays host to a ranked Big East opponent, and while they have been impressive, I don't believe that the Rockets will have the firepower to take down the Bearcats. Cincy by 13

Brian: This is a really interesting in-state matchup that features a Cincinnati team that's off to a hot-start (5-0) and ranked in the top 25. However, they really don't have any signature wins yet, and surprisingly, this will be Cincinnati's first road game of the year. I expect the Glass Bowl to be rocking Saturday night and the Rockets to be poised and ready. Toledo by 7
