Football Recruit Wants to Play Basketball

Deris Duncan is a name that not too many Western Michigan fans may be familiar with, but they should probably get to know it pretty soon. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard out of Noblesville High School, has not received any basketball scholarship offers quite yet. But he believes that they are coming soon.

"Lehigh, Yale, and Eastern Kentucky are the three main schools that have shown the most interest," said Duncan.

He has yet to get contacted by the Western Michigan basketball coaches, but BroncoBlitz.com has learned that he is actually being lightly recruited by the WMU football coaching staff. Deris doesn't have anything lined up at the moment, but he plans to take an unofficial visit to Kalamazoo sometime this summer.

As a wide receiver in football, Deris has received plenty of looks from schools such as Air Force, Ball State, Cincinnati, Indiana, Indiana State, Purdue, Western Kentucky, and Western Michigan. However, he doesn't seem all that interested in playing football in college.

"I've been getting recruited a lot for football," says Duncan. "I'm probably going to get my first offer from Indiana State. Purdue and Indiana are showing some interest too, but I want to play basketball."

Deris Duncan plays for "Indiana Elite Black," one of the best AAU teams in the Midwest.

"The competition is always tough. There are a lot of quick athletic guys. I love playing with them. We share the ball well... a lot better than most teams. There's a lot of talent in our area."

As a basketball player, Deris' strengths are driving to the basket, mid-range shooting, and his vertical. When asked what some of his weaknesses are, Deris mentioned wanting to work a little bit more on his ball handling and three-point shooting. Duncan has the capabilities of playing either the 1 or the 2, but is primarily being recruited as a shooting guard.

Duncan is hoping to make a decision on his commitment in August of this summer.
