2011 Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph- recap

DEERFIELD, Ill.- Over the years, event director Dinos Trigonis has expanded his popular Pangos All-American Camp to include regional camps. Over the weekend, some of the top regional players from the classes of 2013 and 2014 were on hand for the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp. Among the standouts was tough guard Kendrick Nunn.

Pangos All-Midwest notables

Kendrick Nunn, SG- He showed up on Sunday and was the best prospect in the gym when we watched. He's a physical, hard charging lefty guard who handles well enough to slide over and play as a get-to-the-rim point. Super defender and athlete with lots of tools and a style kind of similar to that of Jerel McNeal at the same age.

David Burren, SF- Although he only played on Saturday, the 6-foot-5 freshman from Milwaukee Hamilton made a lot of noise. He's extremely competitive, very athletic and has a nose for the ball. Finished with lots of dunks, assaulted the glass and showed some ability as a playmaker for others off of the dribble.

Richard Freeman, SF- For now, we're going to go ahead and project him as a potential three-man. He's very quick, led the camp in dunks (by a wide margin) and really wreaked havoc by getting out in transition and finishing. He's a lefty who is pretty good off the bounce and has a decent pull-up jumper between 12 and 15 feet.

Dominique Matthews, SG- Only a freshman, the six-footer at St. Rita High is a fluid scorer. He can hit some deep jumpers, is very aggressive to the rim and makes plays in transition.

Byron Zeigler, SF- A sophomore small forward at Detroit Community, Zeigler is an athletic 6-foot-4 kid with athleticism and the long arms and wiry frame you like to see in a wing prospect. Plays hard, gets to the rim and knocked in a few jumpers.

Vic Law, SF- Another freshman at St. Rita in Chicago, Law is an athletic and lengthy 6-foot-5 small forward prospect. He's almost all arms and legs, moves fluidly and seems to have a good feel for the game. He's very young and thus raw, but he's got plenty of talent.

Pat Birt, PG/SG- The skinny southpaw from Plano is a solid combo-guard who likes to attack off the dribble. He's got good size and really likes to use crossovers and between the leg dribbles to set-up pull-up jumpers. Shoots with range and can get others involved.

Demetrius Jackson, SG/PG- We first saw the 2013 product of Mishawaka Marion in the spring with his club team MBA Select. As he was then, he proved to be a tough, physical and aggressive combo guard. One of the camp's top defenders.

Marqwell Jackson, SG- A nice looking wing prospect, the 6-foot-4 Jackson is a freshman at Detroit Crockett. He handles the ball well, has a nice floater and shoots the jumper with confidence.

Markese McGuire, SG- A scorer from Elkhart, Ind., he was one of the best shooter's in camp. Skilled kid who understands how to use dribble moves, jab steps, head fakes and changes of pace to free himself for shots.

Alvin Ellis, SF- One of the camp's highest scorers, the 2013 wing is tough to keep out of the lane. He got dunks in transition and used his physical strength to his advantage as often as possible.

Vitto Brown, PF- A long armed power forward from Ohio, Brown is a promising prospect. While he's not a bad athlete, he relies a lot on an effective jump-hook, good instincts for rebounding the ball and feel for the game. He's got the kind of frame that should easily add another 20-25 pounds as he matures physically.

Jubril Adekoya, PF- Hard work and toughness deserve mention and nobody was bigger in those categories than the 6-foot-5 sophomore. He plays with all of the finesse of a bull in a china shop and gets lots of stuff done.

More Pangos notes and observations

Marvie Keith wasn't the biggest guy in attendance, but the jet-quick 5-10 point guard was one of the fastest. A 2013 product of Crete Monee, he made lots happen for his teammates. ... It's easy to appreciate sophomore shooting guard Leo Svete's game. At 6-foot-3, he is going to be the best shooter on the floor more often than not. He also mixes in some nice drives and is a clever passer who keeps defenders honest. ... Kevin Looney is another freshman to keep an eye on at Milwaukee Hamilton. The 6-foot-4 wing is a bit of a wild man, but plays hard, is pretty productive and has ability. ... The more we got to look at Casey Schlatter, the more he grew on us. He's a skinny 6-foot-7 freshman power forward from Iowa Falls Alden with some skill. Watch the power forwards in the Missouri Valley, a lot of them looked like Schlatter when they were freshman. ...

Nicholas Billingsly is a fine athlete who is already pretty well built for a high school sophomore. The 6-foot-3 wing showed promise as a jump shooter and cleaned up a lot of garbage around the rim. ... Vince Hunter a 6-foot-5 sophomore wing from Consortium Prep in Detroit played tough. He has the look of a potential mid-major type wing who can grind it out in the lane if needed. ... Another freshman power forward from the state of Iowa who showed promise was 6-foot-8 Seth Bonifas from Dubuque. ... Andrew McAuliffe is a hard working 6-foot-7 power forward from Glennbrook North in the Chicago suburbs. The sophomore has a nice motor, good hands and advanced fundamentals to go with some length and deceptive bounce off the floor. ... Another young big who made some ways was 6-foot-8 freshman center Ian Theisen from Osseo High in the Minneapolis area. He's a space eater with good hands and soft touch on the offensive end. ...
