Sampson signs LOI to Wyoming

The Wyoming defensive backfield got a shot-in-the-arm with news that Junior College safety Jesse Sampson signed a Letter of Intent with the Cowboys today.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Sampson was a two-year starter at the College of the Canyons in California and was named All-Conference this season. Sampson led the College of the Canyons a year ago with 53 tackles, including seven for loss. He also intercepted one pass and broke up two others.

COC defensive coordinator, Brian Corbet said Sampson was a high school linebacker at Alameda High School who moved to safety in college, but maintained the toughness needed to play in the box.

"He is a very physical at the point of contact type kid," Corbet said. "He played linebacker in high school, so being in the box fits well into what he does.

"He was the best tackler on our team," Corbet told Wednesday afternoon. "He has a great nose for the football. He is very athletic. He runs low 4.6 or maybe 4.5 in the 40. I think Wyoming will be a very good fit for him."

Corbet said he didn't have a complete list, but knew Sampson had scholarship offers from Portland State, Stoneybrook and was getting a strong look from the University of New Mexico.

"I had not yet had the opportunity to talk to him today so I shot him a text and asked him where he wanted to sign with and he said he liked Wyoming the best and was going to sign his letter today," said Corbet.
