The Broncos beat their arch-rival Central Michigan in dominating fashion Saturday night as they pulled away rather quickly in the second half at McGuirk Arena in Mt. Pleasant, en route to a 76-59 victory to win their fourth straight MAC game.
The Broncos came out to a relatively sluggish start in the beginning, turning the ball over four times in the first four minutes of the game. However, freshman Connar Tava ignited a short run for WMU with a steal at half-court that sent Brandon Pokely to the free-throw line, putting the Broncos up 7-6 for their first lead of the game.
Western Michigan continued their momentum with a pair of three-pointers from sophomore point guard Austin Richie and redshirt junior guard David Brown. From there, the Broncos went on a 7-0 run to grab onto a commanding 19-10 lead early.
The Chips, however, would not go away easily as they climbed back into the game thanks in large part to freshmen Spencer Krannitz, and forward Blake Hibbitts who reeled of 6 straight points for Central Michigan.
On the final possession of the first half, freshman forward John Simons drained a put-back layup to what appeared to narrow the gap to five points. However, following a review, the basket was waived off and the Broncos held on to a 7-point lead heading into the locker room, 33-26.
Central Michigan came out of half-time with noticeably more energy, heating up from behind the arc. However the Broncos responded with a few timely baskets themselves to hold on to an eight-point lead heading into the first media timeout of the second half.
Shayne Whittington continued to lead the Broncos in the second half after a pair of inside post moves, while a David Brown deep ball helped give WMU their biggest lead of the game at 57-41. At the under-8 media timeout, Western Michigan had four players in double-digits, as they eventually cruised to victory winning their fourth straight game.
Shayne Whittington led all scorers with 20 points. David Brown added 13 points, while Nate Hutcheson and Brandon Pokley both pitched in 12 and 10 respectively. Senior walk-on forward Dan Loney sparked the Broncos with 6 rebounds in the first-half alone. He finished with 2 points and 8 rebounds.
Blake Hibbitts and Kyle Randall led all CMU scorers with 14 points each.
Western Michigan (12-7, 4-2) is back in action, on the road, against Miami University (7-11, 2-4) this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
