With the turn of the new year upon us, BroncoBlitz.com will take some time to look back on the year that was in Western Michigan athletics. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be counting down the top ten moments in Bronco sports in 2012, starting with WMU's upset of 20th-ranked Michigan softball in Ann Arbor.
2012 was undeniably a difficult year for Western Michigan softball, as the Broncos were expected by many to repeat as Mid-American Conference champions but instead put up a disappointing 28-25 record overall.
There was a major highlight, however, when the Broncos traveled to Ann Arbor for a midweek meeting with the nationally ranked Michigan Wolverines on April 11.
Michigan has a history as a power program in softball, and to say they rarely lose at home would be an understatement. UM opened their Wilpon Complex in 2008, and the loss to WMU was just their 11th since it's unveiling.
The way it was done was special as well, as WMU's Meredith Whitney silenced the Wolverine bats for a 1-0 win, the first regular season shutout of Michigan since 2007. The Broncos were able to finally break through with a 2-out RBI single by Gracie Barstad in the sixth inning, and Whitney did the rest.
It was the first win for WMU softball in Ann Arbor since 1992.
