September 8, 2012Western Michigan evened their record to 1-1 Saturday night at Waldo Stadium, turning a tied game into a laugher with a 28 point second quarter and coasting to a 52-21 win over FCS Eastern Illinois.
Freshman wideout Jaime Wilson had a huge game, going for 154 yards and two touchdowns to record the biggest game by a WMU freshman wideout since Corey Alston put up 263 against Eastern Michigan on November 1, 1997.
Alex Carder passed for five touchdowns and 366 yards on a 29-for-40 line to bounce back nicely from a tough afternoon at Illinois. Blake Hammond had perhaps his best game as a Bronco, going for 94 yards on six catches with two touchdowns.
Panthers quarterback Jimmy Garappolo had some early success against WMU's secondary as the Panthers managed to match the Broncos in a 14-14 first quarter. The Broncos, though, adjusted to bring four cornerbacks in the game for most plays, and the up-tempo EIU attack had little answer. Garappolo finished 14-of-31 for 212 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Erik Lora made four catches for 100 yards for the Panthers (1-1), and Chris Wright had one of the highlights of the night with a one handed diving grab for an 18-yard touchdown.
